American artist and designer Gwen Murphy collects pairs of worn out shoes and tries to bring out their personality, by literally giving them a face. She makes use of ash clay and acrylic paint to create bugged-out eyes, long faces and pouting lips, and gives each pair a unique face that expresses its unique characterbeing a child considered every pair of shoes to be twins. Her first works were made out of old shoes.
Now, most of the shoe faces are made by Gwen Murphy entirely out of wood. Of course, they cannot be worn. Nonetheless, her works are incredibly popular. She got her sculptor education at Boston University of Fine Arts. She graduated from this university in the distant 1990. Each pair of shoes has not only its own unique style and flavor, but also a specific name. The Foot Fetish series started seven years ago. Gwen used only found discarded shoes.
