Alain Dumas | Pittore Romantico

John Dickson Batten [1860-1932]

- The Garden of Adonis - Amoretta and Time, 1887
The subject of Batten's painting is taken from Book III of Edmund Spenser's "The Faerie Queene", which is devoted to the legend of Chastity. The twins Amoretta and Belphoebe were the daughters of the nymph Chrysogone. The two babies were adopted, Belphoebe by the goddess of the hunt Diana, and Amoretta by Venus, goddess of love. Venus conveyed Amoretta to the Garden of Adonis, her `joyous Paradise', the flowers of which "dame Nature doth her beautify, and decks the girlonds of her Paramoures". However, even here the "faire flowre of beautie fades away, as doth the lilly fresh before the sunny ray", for:

Il giardino

Mille anni e poi mille
Non possono bastare
Per dire
La microeternita'
Di quando m' hai baciato
Di quando t' ho baciata
Un mattino nella luce dell' inverno
Al Parc Montsouris a Parigi
A Parigi
Sulla terra
Sulla terra che e' un astro.

Catherine Coren, 1949 ~ Salon music

Catherine Coren was has always attracted the attention of art amateurs and contemporary masters because of her innate talent, her artist’s sensitivity and her sense of drawing.
In 1980 E. Baboulene wrote to her: “I am touched and marveled at the sight of your paintings, I congratulate you on your work”.
On the basis of Cezanne’s claim that a painter is recognized “by the distance he takes with motif” Catherine Coren is a genius painter. Her landscapes traced with supple and vehement lines, a touch of lyrical spark are plastically very pure. The artist's interiors are a mix of balanced layout, harmony of shades and cold lighting. Coren asserts herself as a great painter of the 1990’s and her laurels are the just reward for her passionate and unrelenting work. For more than 15 years, she has presented her works in Group and Solo Exhibitions in New York, Cannes, Bruxelles, Nancy, Paris and Strasbourg.

Ludmila Curilova | Kishniev, Moldova
