Camille Claudel (1864-1943)

Camille Claudel was a french sculptor and graphic artist. In 1882 the sculptor Auguste Rodin agreed to supervise a small group of young women students, one of whom was the seventeen-year-old Camille Claudel. Auguste and Camille fell in love almost at first sight. Within a few years, however, it appears that Rodin exhausted her, demanding all her time and energy in his service.
By the time she broke off the relationship, in or around 1893, she had become anxious to escape Rodin's overwhelming influence and devote herself exclusively to her own art.

Gustave Courbet | La trombe, 1867

Like the waves he so perfectly captured, Courbet's love affair with the sea ebbed and flowed throughout his career. Born a child of the rugged mountainous terrain around Ornans in the Franche-Comté, Courbet's first glimpse of the sea only came in 1841 during a visit to Normandy with his childhood friend, Urbain Cuenot. Courbet's future interest in the sea as subject derived from visits to different coastal towns and can be divided into five distinct phases: 1854 and the views of the Mediterranean he made from Palavas-les-Flots, while visiting Alfred Bruyas in Montpelier, 1865 during a sojourn on the Normandy coast and a period when the sea provided the backdrop for some of his greatest portraits, such as the Countess Karoly (RF 439), 1866-67 in Trouville and Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, where the sea water is predominantly calm, almost in anticipation of the great series of crashing waves that occurred in 1869-70 and finally at Lac Leman, the lake and its shore that represented the final years of Courbet's life, while exiled in Switzerland.

Egon Schiele (1890-1918) | Espressionista austriaco

William-Adolphe Bouguereau | Academic painter

William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) was a staunch traditionalist whose realistic genre paintings and mythological themes were modern interpretations of classical subjects with a heavy emphasis on the female human body.
In his own time, Bouguereau was considered to be one of the greatest painters in the world by the academic art community, and simultaneously he was reviled by the avant-garde. He also gained wide fame in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Romania and in the United States, and commanded high prices.
His works often sold within days of completion. Some were viewed by international collectors and bought before work had even finished.
Bouguereau's career was nearly a direct ascent with hardly a setback.
To many, he epitomized taste and refinement, and a respect for tradition. To others, he was a competent technician stuck in the past.

Donatello (1386-1466)
