Emanuel Phillips Fox (1865-1915)


Emanuel Phillips Fox was an Australian🎨 impressionist painter. After studying at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School in Melbourne, Fox travelled to Paris to study in 1886 and enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he gained first prize🎨 in his year for design, and École des Beaux-Arts (1887-90), where his masters included William-Adolphe Bouguereau🎨 and Jean-Léon Gérôme🎨, both among the most famous artists of the time.


While at the Beaux Arts, he was awarded🎨 a first prize for painting.
He was greatly influenced by the fashionable school of en plein air Impressionism.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1890, and returned to Melbourne the same year.
He remained in Europe until 1892, when he returned to Melbourne and led what is considered the second phase of the Heidelberg School, an impressionist art movement which had grown in the city during his absence.
He spent over a decade in Europe in the early 20th century before finally settling in Melbourne, where he died. | © Wikipedia
















Emanuel Phillips Fox è stato un pittore impressionista Australiano🎨.
Dopo aver studiato alla National Gallery of Victoria Art School di Melbourne, Fox si recò nel 1886 a Parigi per studiare.
Si iscrisse all'Académie Julian, dove ottenne il primo premio🎨 nel suo anno per il design, ed all'École des Beaux-Arts (1887-90), dove i suoi maestri includevano William-Adolphe Bouguereau🎨 e Jean-Léon Gérôme🎨, entrambi tra i più famosi artisti dell'epoca.
Mentre era alla Beaux Arts, gli fu assegnato un primo premio per la pittura. Fu fortemente influenzato dalla scuola alla moda dell'impressionismo en plein air.


Espose al Salon di Parigi nel 1890 e tornò a Melbourne lo stesso anno.
Rimase in Europa fino al 1892, quando tornò a Melbourne e guidò quella che è considerata la seconda fase della Heidelberg School, il movimento artistico impressionista che era cresciuto in città durante la sua assenza.
Trascorse più di un decennio in Europa all'inizio del XX secolo prima di stabilirsi definitivamente a Melbourne, dove morì.
