Vincent Van Gogh | The sower series

Peasant imagery and especially that of the 'Sower' was something that Van Gogh turned to numerous times throughout his career. His affiliation with this subject was partly as a response to the work of the romantic Realists such as Millet, and a reflection of his own socialist ideals.

The sower in particular was a figure that Van Gogh saw in terms of representing the eternal cycle of agricultural life, of honorable endeavor and tradition, and symbolized these qualities to the artist.

The sun was also a symbolic element for Van Gogh, and in many of these paintings, it shines with an unearthly luminescence.

Here he has created a great orb of light, from which short precise brushstrokes radiate outwards so that the whole sky becomes bathed in golden rags.

The rest of the canvas is made up of short, quick brushstrokes that lend the ground a textured and slightly surreal feel.

L'immaginario contadino e soprattutto quello del "Seminatore" fu qualcosa a cui Van Gogh si rivolse numerose volte nel corso della sua carriera.

La sua affiliazione con questo argomento era in parte una risposta al lavoro dei realisti romantici come Millet e un riflesso dei suoi ideali socialisti. Il seminatore in particolare era una figura che Van Gogh vedeva in termini di rappresentare l'eterno ciclo della vita agricola, di impegno onorevole e tradizione, e simboleggiava queste qualità per l'artista.

Il sole era anche un elemento simbolico per Van Gogh ed in molti di questi dipinti brilla di una luminescenza ultraterrena.

Qui ha creato una grande sfera di luce, dalla quale brevi pennellate precise si irradiano verso l'esterno in modo che tutto il cielo si bagni di stracci dorati.

Il resto della tela è costituito da pennellate brevi e veloci che conferiscono al terreno una sensazione materica e leggermente surreale.

Appena percettibili sono due corvi che emergono dallo sfondo fratturato, mentre la figura sembra essere parte integrante del terreno su cui lavora.
