Claude Monet | Lo stile

Vincent van Gogh | Still Life of Oranges and Lemons with Blue Gloves, 1889

Vincent van Gogh painted this picture soon after his release from the hospital, where he was recovering from the disastrous final days of Paul Gauguin’s stay with him in Arles.
In a long letter to his brother Theo posted January 23, 1889, he mentions creating this painting alongside several other issues, including the need to make money through picture sales. He likely had the market in mind in painting this still life.

The painter was clearly attracted to the shapes and hues of the citrus fruit arrayed in the wicker basket, and the way their varied orb shapes play against the weave of the dried sticks, the whole set off by the prickly needles of the cypress branches. Van Gogh refers in his letter to an "air of chic" in this picture, prompted perhaps by the inclusion of blue garden gloves.
The painting reveals the artist’s extraordinarily original sense of color, as well as his richly expressive paint application as he struggles to evoke the nubby waxen skin of the various fruits, the spiky fur of the branches, and the limp material of the worn gloves.

Annibale Gatti | The Master Light of All Our Seeing, 1887

Annibale Gatti | The Master Light of All Our Seeing, 1887

Brilliantly composed by the Italian fresco painter Annibale Gatti (1827-1909), the painting depicts a sweeping view reminiscent of Raphael’s The School of Athens. Gatti’s figures are similarly sprawled across his canvas, displaying the same symmetry and careful placement as Raphael’s composition.

The works even share a handful of figures, from the Renaissance architect Donato Bramante and philosopher Pythagoras of Samos to Michelangelo and Raphael himself.
Though Gatti’s work follows in the classical spirit of Raphael’s fresco, "The Master Light of All Our Seeing" takes on a grander meaning than the Renaissance composition. Depicted at the center is the figure of Jesus, symbolically positioned as "The Master of All Our Seeing" as his light shines on the multitude of figures who surround him.

Pablo Picasso | Family of Saltimbanques, 1905

Measuring 7 by 7.5 feet, "Family of Saltimbanques" is the most important painting Picasso made during his early career. Immediately obvious is the isolation and stillness of its figures. Shouldn’t these acrobats, dancers, and jesters suggest the frolic or at least the forced gaiety of circus performance?
That was not what Picasso had in mind.
For him, these wandering saltimbanques stood for the melancholy of the neglected underclass of artistes, a kind of extended family with whom he identified.

Eugenè Burnand | Apostles Peter and John hurry to the tomb on the morning of the Resurrection, 1898

"Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple [John], and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.
Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again to their own homes" - John 20:3-10.

▻ "Nature is more depth than surface. Hence the need to introduce into our light vibrations represented by the reds and yellows, a sufficient amount of blue to give the impression of air".

Claude Monet | Snow Scene at Argenteuil, 1875

Snow at Argenteuil / Rue sous la neige, Argenteuil - is an oil-on-canvas landscape painting from the Impressionist artist Claude Monet.
It is the largest of no fewer than eighteen works Monet painted of his home commune of Argenteuil while it was under a blanket of snow during the winter of 1874-1875.
This painting - number 352 in Wildenstein's catalogue of the works of Monet - is the largest of the eighteen.
The attention to detail evident in the smaller paintings is less evident in this larger picture. Instead, Monet has rendered large areas of the canvas in closely like tones and colours of blue and grey.
