David Garrett | Smile (Charlie Chaplin song) 🌹

In the final scene of Modern Times, Charlie and the gamine set off down the road to a new life.
When they get up off the grass verge to go, he pauses and points to the corners of his mouth, indicating that she should smile.
"Smile" has become a popular standard since its original use in Charlie Chaplin's film and has been recorded by numerous artists.
"Smile" is a song based on the theme song used in the soundtrack for Charlie Chaplin's 1936 film Modern Times.

Chaplin, who composed the song with the help of composer David Raksin, was inspired by a sequence in the first act love duet from Puccini's opera Tosca, beginning with Cavaradossi singing "Quale occhio al mondo può star di paro".
John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954.
In the lyrics, based on lines and themes from the film, the singer is telling the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile.

Smile

Music by Charles Chaplin, Lyrics by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
you’ll get by

If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through
for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying

Smile what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just
Smile
