Bernard Cathelin è stato un pittore Francese nato a Parigi e membro della Scuola di Parigi che includeva Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Dufy e molti altri tra cui Maurice Brianchon, insegnante di Cathelin presso l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.
Il Musée de Valence gli ha dedicato una retrospettiva nell'estate del 1997.

Sebbene abbia ricevuto il plauso della critica già nel 1950, Cathelin non è stato in grado di vivere esclusivamente della sua pittura fino al 1955.
Da quel momento Cathelin ha ricevuto riconoscimenti in costante aumento ed è stata esposta in oltre 50 mostre in tutto il mondo.
Per tutta la vita ha mantenuto un amore radicato per il suo paese e soprattutto per la Drôme, da dove proveniva sua madre.
Famosi per i dipinti ad olio e le litografie con una ricchezza di consistenza e colori vivaci, i tre temi preferiti nel lavoro di Cathelin sono: la natura morta, i paesaggi ed i ritratti di donne.
Cathelin ha viaggiato molto in tutto il mondo. Paesi come Messico, Russia, Giappone, Italia e Spagna sono stati fonte di ispirazione per le sue creazioni: e sempre i paesaggi della Drôme in Provenza e vicina dove ha trovato le sue radici.
Eletto alla Legion d'Onore dal Presidente della Repubblica francese, François Mitterrand nel 1995, il Musée de Valence gli ha dedicato una retrospettiva del suo lavoro nell'estate del 1997.

Cathelin was born in Paris. Throughout his life, he has maintained a deep-rooted love for his country and especially for the Drôme, from where his mother came.
His mother, Madeleine Terrail, was born in the family property of Les Rebattières which has been in the family for several generations. The Musée de Valence dedicated him a retrospective of his work in the summer of 1997. This exhibition by drewing local and worldwide visitors established a new frequentation record for the museum.
In 2000, the Shanghai Art Museum in China organised a retrospective exhibition presenting 40 years of Bernard Cathelin’s works.
Bernard Cathelin died out on April 17 2004, but great exhibitions are always dedicated to him in France, while others are in preparation across the world.
Bernard Cathelin has an extensive following in France, USA, Japan, Switzerland, Canada and England and has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Blumenthal Prize (1950), the Emily Loewe Prize (1953) and the Othon Friesz Prize (1958). Cathelin has been featured in over 50 exhibitions worldwide and was a member of the School of Paris, which included such luminaries as Matisse, De Buffet, and Maurice Brianchon.
Amongst the important and prestigious shows he has been a part of are Fondation Gianadda à Martigny (Suisse) in 1985, Château de Chenonceau (France) in 1987, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (France) in 1992, Daimaru Museum Tokyo (Japon) in 1994, Château de Bagatelle (France) in 1995, Musée de la Seita (France) in 1996, Rétrospective au Musée de Valence (France) in 1997, and Retrospective at the Museum of Shangai (Chine) in 2000. Cathelin’s painterly sensibilities distinguished him among his peers in a generation where painting became less an art than a process.
His international appeal is in part due to the energy and vitality seen throughout his work, which is recognized for its' strength, simplicity and sincerity, and characterized by purity and potency. Icon-like in form, it possesses a subtle richness which is conveyed through texture and colour. Cathelin’s canvases present a radiant synthesis of life and art.
It is the passionate sensibility of the artist that emerges from the canvas to capture the viewer’s attention, resulting in dynamic images, where landscapes are not stationary and models are not still. Cathelin is also a master lithographer having worked for over 30 years at the Mourlet Atelier in Paris beside such contemporaries as Chagall and Picasso.
