Gabriel Ferrier | Orientalist painter

Gabriel-Joseph-Marie-Augustin Ferrier (29 September 1847 in Nîmes - 6 June 1914 in Paris) was a French portrait painter and orientalist.
His father was a pharmacist.
He began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he worked with Ernest Hébert and Isidore Pils.
His first exhibit was at the Salon in 1869.



Two years later, he was awarded the Prix de Rome for his depiction of a scene from the Flood and studied at the French Academy in Rome from 1873 to 1876.

Upon returning to France, he specialized in painting portraits of notable figures connected with the Third Republic.
In 1883, he took an extended trip to Algeria, where he created works in the Orientalist style.

Some of those works earned him a Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle (1889).
He later was named a Professor of Design at the Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur, then became a lecturer at the École des Beaux-arts, succeeding Jean-Léon Gérôme.


He also taught at the Académie Julian.
In 1906, he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
He was also a member of the Société des Artistes Français.

In 1911, he became a Knight in the Légion d'honneur.

Gabriel Ferrier (Nîmes, 29 settembre 1847 - Parigi, 6 giugno 1914) è stato un pittore Francese.
Gabriel Joseph Marie Augustin Ferrier nacque nel sud della Francia, a Nîmes.
Suo padre era farmacista e rispettò la vocazione artistica di suo figlio lasciandolo partire per Parigi, dove il giovane Ferrier si iscrisse all'École des beaux-arts. Ferrier fu quindi allievo di Ernest Hébert e di Isidore Pils.

Terminati gli studi espose in vari Salon già a partire dal 1869.
Nel 1872 vinse il Prix de Rome in pittura con la tela Une scène de Déluge (Una scena del Diluvio).
Soggiornò quindi a Roma nell'Accademia di Francia a Villa Medici dal 1873 al 1876.
Rientrato in Francia si specializzò in ritratti ed ebbe diversi incarichi da parte di vari personaggi importanti della Terza repubblica.


Nel 1883 Fece un viaggio in Algeria, dal quale tornò portando con sé alcune tele di carattere orientalista.
All'Esposizione universale di Parigi del 1889 ottenne la medaglia d'oro.

Divenne quindi professore di disegno alla Scuola della Légion d'honneur ed in seguito docente all'École des beaux-arts di Parigi, come successore di Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Fu eletto anche membro dell'Académie des beaux-arts a partire dal 1906.
Fu membro della Società Teosofica.
