A Love Letter from Balzac to Countess Ewelina Hańska

My beloved angel,

"I am nearly mad about you, as much as one can be mad: I cannot bring together two ideas that you do not interpose yourself between them.
I can no longer think of nothing but you. In spite of myself, my imagination carries me to you. I grasp you, I kiss you, I caress you, a thousand of the most amorous caresses take possession of me. As for my heart, there you will always be - very much so. I have a delicious sense of you there.
But my God, what is to become of me, if you have deprived me of my reason?
This is a monomania which, this morning, terrifies me. I rise up every moment say to myself, ‘Come, I am going there!’ Then I sit down again, moved by the sense of my obligations.

Wisława Szymborska | The railroad station / La stazione ferroviaria

My nonarrival in the city of N.
took place on the dot.

You'd been alerted
in my unmailed letter.

You were able not to be there
at the agreed-upon time.

Jeff Rowland | Right here waiting for you

The train pulled up at platform 3.
A lot of people got out.

My absence joined the throng
as it made its way toward the exit.

Several women rushed
to take my place
in all that rush.

Somebody ran up to one of them.
I didn't know him,
but she recognized him
immediately.

While they kissed
with not our lips,
a suitcase disappeared,
not mine.

The railroad station in the city of N.
passed its exam
in objective existence
with flying colors.

Jeff Rowland

The whole remained in place.
Particulars scurried
along the designated tracks.

Even a rendezvous
took place as planned.

Beyond the reach
of our presence.

In the paradise lost
of probability.

Somewhere else.
Somewhere else.
How these little words ring.

Maria Wisława Anna Szymborska (1923-2012) was a Polish poet, essayist, translator and recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature "for poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context to come to light in fragments of human reality".

Jeff Rowland

Il mio arrivo nella città di N.
è avvenuto puntualmente.

Eri stato avvertito
con una lettera non spedita.
Hai fatto in tempo a non venire
all’ora prevista.

Il treno è arrivato sul terzo binario.
È scesa molta gente.

L’assenza della mia persona
si avviava verso l’uscita tra la folla.

Alcune donne mi hanno sostituito
frettolosamente
in quella fretta.

A una è corso incontro
qualcuno che non conoscevo,
ma lei lo ha riconosciuto
immediatamente.

Jeff Rowland

Si sono scambiati
un bacio non nostro,
intanto si è perduta
una valigia non mia.

La stazione della città di N.
ha superato bene la prova
di esistenza oggettiva.

L’insieme restava al suo posto.
I particolari si muovevano
sui binari designati.

È avvenuto perfino
l’incontro fissato.

Fuori dalla portata
della nostra presenza.
Nel paradiso perduto
della probabilità.

Altrove.
Altrove.
Come risuonano queste piccole parole

Jeff Rowland

Jarek Kubicki, 1976 | 32nd day of Covid-19 Quarantine

"In recent days", says Polish painter🎨 Jarek Kubicki, "in Poland there have been many reports of police abuse in connection with quarantine, people are punished for ordinary cycling or jogging, even if they are alone and away from residential areas.
This provoked me to create a series of 32nd day of Quarantine, which refers to this situation in a light way, based on well-known works of art, while allowing to channel social frustration".
