Shen Hanwu 沈漢武, 1950 | Genre painter


Shen Hanwu was born in Wuhan, Hubei province.
In the 1980s, he became famous as a book illustrator. In 1986, Shen entered Wuhan Art Academy and became a professional artist.
Throughout the 1990s his oil paintings were frequently exhibited in national fine art exhibitions and in 1995, Shen became a member of the Chinese National Artists Association.


Most of Shen Hanwu’s works are portraits. He describes life in the Chinese countryside in a straightforward way, using fine, clear brushwork and subtle, subdued colours.
Whether he is depicting country girls, workers or Red Guards, these are all people who are closely connected with his own life.
His paintings convey the warmth and empathy he feels towards his subjects.
Underlying all his work is a belief in the simple sincerity of country people and a deep nostalgia for the peace and simplicity of country life.


















Shen Hanwu è nato ad Wuhan, nella provincia di Hubei. Negli anni '80 divenne famoso come illustratore di libri.
Nel 1986, Shen entrò all'Accademia d'arte di Wuhan e divenne artista professionista.
Durante gli anni '90 i suoi dipinti ad olio sono stati spesso esposti in mostre d'arte nazionali e nel 1995 Shen è diventato membro della Chinese National Artists Association.
Shen Hanwu si distingue per la maestria con cui utilizza pennelli e colori che, con la sua sensibilità ed empatia nei confronto dei modelli che posano per lui, produce dipinti molto precisi e ben delineati: anche perché le contadine, i lavoratori e le guardie rosse che Shen Hanwu raffigura, sono persone che sono strettamente legate con la sua vita.
