Vladimir Pervuninsky, 1957 | The Viennese Waltz

Vladimir Pervuninsky / Владимир Первунинский was born in the Russian town of Chelyabinsk. Recognized at an early age for his artistic talent, he went on to attend the Omsk Pedagogical Institute, where he majored in painting and graphics.

Vladimir, in search of a more focused and complete training, set off for Moscow, where he was accepted into the acclaimed V.I. Surikov Moscow State Art College. There, he studied under the tutelage of the well-known academician D.M. Mochalsky.

Vladimir, always, was fascinated by Impressionism and Belle Epoque painting, the strict curriculum of the Soviet Ministry of Culture allowed no latitude for students or instructors to stray from the state sanctioned style of Socialist Realism.

Leon Bazile Perrault | Rose Seller

Léon Bazile Perrault (Poitiers, 16 June 1832-1908, Royan) was a French academic painter.

He was born to a modest family.

A student of William Bouguereau and François-Edouard Picot, he exhibited at the Salon from 1863 onwards, producing many genre works which were immensely popular.

He was famous for his le petit naufragé (The little shipwrecked boy, 1874) and his paintings of children.

Paul Cézanne | Post-Impressionist painter

Cézanne's🎨 works were rejected numerous times by the official Salon in Paris and ridiculed by art critics when exhibited with the Impressionists.

Yet during his lifetime Cézanne was considered a master by younger artists who visited his studio in Aix.

Along with the work of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, the work of Cézanne, with its sense of immediacy and incompletion, critically influenced Matisse and others prior to Fauvism and Expressionism.

After Cézanne died in 1906, his paintings were exhibited in a large museum-like retrospective in Paris, September 1907.

The 1907 Cézanne retrospective at the Salon d'Automne greatly affected the direction that the avant-garde in Paris took, lending credence to his position as one of the most influential artists of the 19th century and to the advent of Cubism.

Dan Thompson | Figurative painter

American painter🎨 Dan Thompson was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and graduated from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC.

He earned his MFA from the Graduate School of Figurative Art of the New York Academy of Art, and supplemented his training with several additional years of private study and studio apprenticeships along the east coast of the United States.

He has been awarded🎨 two grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and has twice received the Ethel Lorraine Bernstein Memorial Award🎨 for Excellence in Painting from the Corcoran College of Art and Design. In 2001, Thompson won Best of Show in the American Society of Portrait Artist’s International Portrait Competition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Sir Herbert James Gunn (noto anche come Sir James Gunn) è nato a Glasgow il 30 giugno 1893, figlio di Richard Gunn, un drappeggio, e Thomasina Munro.

Ha studiato per diversi anni alla Glasgow School of Art ed all'Edinburgh College of Art.

Mario Irarrázabal, 1940

L'artista Mario Irarrázabal è nato a Santiago, in Cile. É uno scultore che dopo aver finito la scuola si trasferì negli Stati Uniti dove trascorse cinque anni nel seminario della Congregazione della Santa Croce.

Dal 1960-1964 ha studiato presso l'Università di Notre Dame dove ha conseguito la laurea in Arte e Filosogia ed il Master in Belle Arti.

Si trasferì in Italia per continuare i suoi studi di Teologia all'Università Gregoriana di Roma.

Tra il 1967-1968 studiò nella Germania occidentale con lo scultore Waldemar Otto, guidandolo nella linea dell'espressionismo figurativo tedesco.

Nel 1969 tornò in Cile, e da quel momento si dedicò alla scultura con la quale riuscì a esprimere sè stesso.

Per due anni (dal 1972-1974) insegnò scultura accademica all'Università Cattolica.

Eugenio Prati (1842-1907)

Eugenio Prati (Caldonazzo, 27 gennaio 1842 - Caldonazzo, 8 marzo 1907) è stato un pittore Italiano.

Nasce il 27 gennaio 1842 a Caldonazzo, in Trentino ed è il primogenito di dieci figli, il padre, Domenico Prati, è geometra e proprietario terriero, la madre, Lucia Garbari, è parente di Tullio Garbari, pittore d'arte sacra dei primi del 900.

Nel 1854 frequenta i corsi di pittura dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia ed è allievo di Michelangelo Grigoletti autore di opere religiose (pale d'altare), del classicista Pompeo Marino Molmenti esponente della pittura veneta del tempo e del pittore austriaco Karl von Blaas della corrente dei nazareni.

John Bradshaw Crandell (American, 1896-1966)

John Bradshaw Crandell was known as the artist of the stars, a glamour painter. Among those who posed for Crandell were Carol Lombard, Bette Davis, Judy Garland, Veronica Lake and Lana Turner.

In 1921 he began his career with an ad for Lorraine hair nets sold exclusively by F. W. Woolworth. His first cover illustration was the May 28, 1921 issue for Judge magazine.

In later life he went from illustrations to oil on canvas paintings which included political figures. He also provided poster work for 20th Century Fox.

In 2006 he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators hall of fame. In March 2010, an illustration for the 1952 Dutch Treat Club yearbook of Crandell's sold for $17.000.

Paolo di Dono (Italian, 1397-1475)

Paolo di Dono, detto Paolo Uccello è stato un pittore e mosaicista italiano. Fu tra i protagonisti della scena artistica fiorentina della metà del XV secolo. Secondo quanto racconta Vasari nelle sue Vite, Paolo Uccello "non ebbe altro diletto che d'investigare alcune cose di prospettiva difficili et impossibili".

Le sue composizioni sono costruite con prospettive, derivate più dagli studi sull'ottica medievali che sulle nuove conquiste rinascimentali, che non servono a dare ordine logico alla composizione racchiusa entro uno spazio finito e misurabile, ma servono a creare scenografie fantastiche e antropomorfe in spazi indefiniti, elementi tipici della cultura tardogotica.

L'impressione onirica è accentuata dall'uso di monocromi e dall'uso di cieli e sfondi scuri, su cui risaltano luminose le figure bloccate in posizioni innaturali.

Barbara McCann (1948-2011)

Barbara McCann ha iniziato i suoi sforzi artistici con il disegno da bambina, e poi con la pittura durante l'adolescenza. Dopo il diploma di scuola superiore, ha intrapreso l'apprendistato di quattro anni in illustrazione e design architettonico, che ha posto le basi per una carriera nell'arte commerciale.

McCann si è trasferita in Florida nel 1973 e per i successivi 20 anni ha gestito il proprio studio di illustrazione architettonica.

Il lavoro di Barbara McCann infonde una pesante tecnica di impasto palatte con un senso di solidità e dimensione.

Vittorio Matteo Corcos | I sogni della Belle Époque

Vittorio Matteo Corcos (1859-1933) naque a Livorno da una modesta famiglia ebraica. Studia qui con il pittore Giuseppe Baldini, poi all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze con Enrico Pollastrini (1875-78) e, grazie a una borsa del Comune di Livorno, a Napoli con Domenico Morelli (1878).

Dal 1880, per 6 anni, è a Parigi, dove presto firma un lungo contratto con la famosa galleria Goupil e frequenta prima il pugliese Giuseppe de Nittis, poi lo studio del ritrattista Léon Bonnat. Inizia così a ritrarre uomini, come qui il Ritratto di Giuseppe Garibaldi (1882), e soprattutto donne.

Nel 1886 torna a Livorno, espone alla Prima esposizione di Belle Arti in Livorno, sposa la colta Emma Ciabatti e si trasferisce a Firenze, dove il suo salotto è frequentato da artisti e letterati (lui stesso scrive racconti), ma continua a viaggiare in Europa.

Sandro Botticelli | Portraits

Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) painted a number of portraits, although not nearly as many as have been attributed to him.

There are a number of idealized portrait-like paintings of women which probably do not represent a specific person (several closely resemble the Venus in his Venus and Mars).

Traditional gossip links these to the famous beauty Simonetta Vespucci, who died aged twenty-two in 1476, but this seems unlikely.

These figures represent a secular link to his Madonnas.

Pietro Gaudenzi | Pittore verista

Gaudenzi, Pietro (1880-1955) - Figlio di Enrico, musicista di origine bergamasca, e di Rachele De Negri, genovese, nacque il 18 genn a Genova.

Ricevuta una prima formazione artistica dal pittore F. Del Santo a La Spezia, frequentò l'Accademia ligustica di belle arti dove fu allievo di C. Viazzi. Collaborò inoltre (1899) come redattore artistico al quotidiano genovese Il Lavoro.

Dopo avere vinto alcuni premi banditi dal Comune di Genova, nel 1903 si aggiudicò il pensionato artistico Duchessa di Galliera, godibile per cinque anni a Roma, dove si trasferì nel 1904.

Nella capitale il Gaudenzi studiò i maestri del Rinascimento - soprattutto Michelangelo e Raffaello - mentre, tra i moderni, mostrò interesse per G.A. Sartorio, A. Mancini, A. Spadini e F.P. Michetti. Alcuni degli artisti citati compaiono, insieme con il Gaudenzi, tra i collaboratori della rivista Novissima.

Victor Lagye | Genre painter

Victor Lagye (20 June 1825, in Ghent - 1 September 1896, in Antwerp) was a Belgian painter🎨 and illustrator best known for his genre paintings🎨 and history scenes.

He participated in various decorative programs commissioned by the Belgian government. In his later years he was active in art education.

Victor Lagye was a painter whose main subject matter was portraits and genre paintings.

He started as a typical representative of the late-Romantic style as developed in Belgium by pupils and teachers of the Antwerp Academy.

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres | Life and artworks

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres - Pittore, nato a Montauban il 29 agosto 1780, morto a Parigi il 14 gennaio 1867. In un primo tempo allievo del padre, decoratore e miniatore non privo di talento; giunto a Parigi poco prima della rivoluzione di Termidoro (agosto 1799) entrò nello studio di L. David, occupato allora con il celebre quadro Le Sabine.

L'Ingres si fece presto notare dal maestro e pare abbia collaborato al ritratto della signora Récamier; tutta la vita rimase fedele al grande riformatore della pittura, pur rimproverandogli l'enfasi, l'abuso dell'imitazione della statuaria antica, la mancanza di spontaneità. Sin dalla giovinezza l'Ingres, pur dotato di un gusto squisito e di un sentimento musicale della linea, fu un deciso realista e nella sua opera fuse in modo unico l'arabesco decorativo e il senso voluttuoso della vita.

Between 1871-1878 Claude Monet lived in Argenteuil – an idyllic suburb on the Seine that was noticeably transformed by industrialization in the vicinity of the capital.

The promenade directs the viewer’s gaze into the distance, where a traditional villa in the style of the seventeenth century is flanked by towering factory chimneys.

In the light of the late afternoon, the sky and river glow in nuances of delicate pink and yellow.

George Inness (1825-1894)

In this canvas, Vincent uses pointillist like dabs and his own developing thick dashes of yellows, lavender and greens to portray a locale commonly chosen by the impressionists, the Seine around Asnieres.

Achille Laugé | Étude de Chrysanthèmes

The son of wealthy farmers, French Neo-Impressionist painter Achille Laugé (1861-1944) was born in Arzens in the Aude region of southern France.

In 1878 his parents sent him to study at a pharmacy in Toulouse, however, against their wishes he enrolled at the school of the Beaux-Arts where he met the artist Bourdelle.

John Atkinson Grimshaw (Victorian-era painter, 1836-1893)

John Atkinson Grimshaw (6 settembre 1836 - 13 ottobre 1893) è stato un artista Britanico dell'epoca Vittoriana, meglio conosciuto per le sue scene notturne di paesaggi urbani.

L'accuratezza di Grimshaw e la spinta al realismo furono criticati da alcuni contemporanei.

Albert Rieger | Landscape painter

Austrian🎨 landscape and marine painter Albert Rieger (Trieste, 1834 - Vienna,1905) was the son and pupil of painter Giuseppe Rieger. He was also influenced by the works of the German artist Bernhard Fiedler (1816-1904). Rieger's preferred subjects were marines and landscapes.

In 1838 settled he with the family in Vienna.

His works were exhibited in many exhibitions in Munich and Paris works are presented in important collections, for example at the Museum of Altenburg and in Wroclaw.

Crown prince Rudolf bought his landscapes "Am Traunsee" and "Gosausee".

Rieger was awarded🎨 with Gold Austrian Medal and Great Golden Swedish-Norwegian Medal.

Eugène Delacroix | Stile artistico

Gustave Loiseau | Pittore Post-Impressionista

Gustave Loiseau (Parigi, 1865-1935) è stato un pittore Francese, appartenente al movimento dei post-impressionisti.

L'espressione pittorica di Loiseau si mantenne sempre nell'alveo della corrente post-impressionista e se egli mostrò qualche evidente influenza da parte di altri maestri, non si può che fare il nome di Claude Monet, specie osservando le sue rappresentazioni dei porti, delle falesie e delle chiese, eseguite in piccole serie.

Loiseau dipingeva all'aria aperta, immerso nei paesaggi che lo ispiravano, in Bretagna, in Normandia, o anche nei centri abitati, come Moret-sur-Loing o la stessa Parigi. Realizzò molte tele su Pontoise e sulla sua regione, come del resto fece anche Camille Pissarro, riprendendo il quartiere dell'Hermitage, la cattedrale di Saint Maclou, la banchina di Ponthuis e le sponde dell'Oise. E si portò anche in molti dei centri abitati circostanti, come Auvers-sur-Oise, Nesles-la-Vallée, Osny e Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône.

Emmanuel Garant, 1953

Nato a Lévis, il pittore Canadese Emmanuel Garant, ha studiato disegno e pittura dal 1973-1976 con suo padre, André Garant, e sua madre, Louise Carrier, entrambi pittori di belle arti celebrati in Quebec ed in altri paesi.

Emmanuel è cresciuto in un ambiente favorevole e grazie ai sforzi artistici ha sfiorato gli amici dei suoi genitori come il pittore Jean-Paul Lemieux e molti altri.

Gerrit Dou (1613-1675)

As the son of a glass engraver, Gerrit Dou began by learning to engrave and paint glass.

In 1628, he was apprenticed to Rembrandt.

Here Dou learned the art of chiaroscuro, the contrast of light and shade which became his speciality: his candlelit scenes became all the rage.

Dou’s genre paintings also sold for high prices.

Camille Pissarro | Le Marché de Gisors, Grande-Rue, 1885

On Monday mornings, Camille Pissarro often joined his wife Julie and a couple of their children, with some household helpers, for the two-and-a-half-mile excursion from their home in Éragny to attend market day in Gisors, a town of about four thousand inhabitants further down the Epte River.

While Julie stocked up on produce and provisions for the coming week, Pissarro sketched the many people from Gisors and nearby villages who gathered among the stalls set up on the Grand-Rue (today the rue de Vienne) near the town hall, as they engaged in selling, buying, or bartering, exchanging news, and socializing during this all-important, weekly communal event.

Ludwig Dettmann | Couple in Landscape

Ludwig Julius Christian Dettmann (1865-1944) was a German Impressionist painter.

He was one of the founders of the Berlin Secession in 1898, and, together with Max Liebermann, Walter Leistikow, Otto Heinrich Engel, Oskar Frenzel, Curt Herrmann and Fritz Klimsch, was a member of the advisory board.

Camille Pissarro | Jeanne Pissarro (Minette) holding a Fan, 1873

Jeanne-Rachel, known as Minette, was born in 1865 and died at Pontoise on 6 April 1874.

She was a sickly child and treated by Dr Paul Gachet.

In this portrait, painted when she was eight, the subdued colouring and tentative handling give an added intimacy to the scene.

She holds a Japanese fan, reflecting her father's increasing interest in Japanese art.

Vittorio Matteo Corcos (Livorno, 4 October 1859 - 8 November 1933) was an Italian painter🎨, known for his portraits.

Many of his genre works depict winsome and finely dressed young men and women, in moments of repose and recreation.

In 1880, the artist established himself in the Parisian art scene, falling into the circles of Léon Bonnat and Giovanni Boldini🎨.

Between 1881-1886, he frequently exhibited at the Salon.

His works are held in the collections of the Uffizi in Florence and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome.

Elise MacDonald | Magical Surrealist painter

Hermann Corrodi | Italian ruins at the nightfall

Hermann David Salomon Corrodi (July 1844 - 30 January 1905) was an Italian painter** of landscapes and orientalist scenes
Corrodi was born in Frascati (an alternate source lists his birthplace as Zurich) and lived for many years in Rome. Corrodi studied at the Academy of St Luke under his father, Salomon Corrodi (1810-1892) and in Paris (1872).
Corrodi received commissions for history paintings from the British royal family. He was acquainted with most of the European royalty of the time, including a friendship with Queen Victoria, and traveled widely in the Far East, including Egypt, Syria, Cyprus and Istanbul, which provided the subject matter for many of his paintings.

Julio Romero De Torres (Cordova, 1880-1930) è stato un pittore Spagnolo, figlio di Rafael Romero Barros, pittore e curatore del Museo di belle arti di Cordova.

Julio Romero De Torres nacque all'interno del Museo di belle arti di Cordova, dove il padre lavorava e risiedeva.

Il più giovane di tre fratelli con il padre anch'esso pittore e ricercatore, conosciuto per la fondazione del museo Cordova.

Arthur Streeton | Pittore Impressionista

Sir Arthur Streeton (1867-1943) è stato un pittore Australiano, membro della celebre Scuola di Heidelberg di artisti Australiani, meglio noto per i suoi paesaggi rurali.

Streeton nacque a Mount Duneed, a sudovest di Geelong, nello stato australiano del Victoria e la sua famiglia si trasferì a Richmond nel 1874. Iniziò i suoi studi presso le National Gallery Schools nel 1882.

Streeton fu influenzato dall'Impressionismo francese e dall'opera di Turner. Durante questo periodo iniziò la sua collaborazione con altri artisti come Frederick McCubbin e Tom Roberts — un gruppo che sarebbe divenuto in seguito il nucleo della Scuola di Heidelberg — iniziò inoltre a dipingere "en plein air" scene rurali della campagna attorno a Melbourne, inclusi il campo per artisti di Box Hill e Heidelberg.

Tytus Brzozowski

Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959)

Sir Alfred James Munnings, KVO, PRA era conosciuto come uno dei migliori pittori Inglesi di cavalli e come critico schietto del modernismo.

Coinvolto dal Canadian War Memorials Fund di Lord Beaverbrook, dopo la Grande Guerra ottenne numerose commissioni prestigiose che lo resero ricco.

Munnings è stato eletto presidente della Royal Academy of Arts nel 1944.

E' stato fatto un Knight Bachelor nel mese di luglio dello stesso anno, ed è stato nominato un Cavaliere Comandante del Royal Victorian Order nel 1947 New Year Honours.
