Giuseppe De Nittis (1846-1884) was born on this day in 1846 in the Puglian city of Barletta. Like other 19th-century artists, De Nittis worked out of doors, emulating the plein-air aesthetic and varied light effects of the French Impressionists and Italian Macchiaioli.

De Nittis worked in oil, pastel, and as a printmaker.

Michelangelo Merisi, detto il Caravaggio, Milano 1571 - Porto Ercole 1610, è stato un pittore italiano. Attivo a Roma, Napoli, Malta e in Sicilia fra il 1593 e il 1610, fu uno dei più celebri pittori italiani di tutti i tempi, dalla fama ancora oggi universale.

Il pittore apparteneva ad una famiglia stimata e abbastanza agiata.

La sua vocazione deve essersi manifestata molto presto, poiché già nel 1584 entra come allievo nella bottega del pittore bergamasco Simone Peterzano, allievo di Tiziano.

E' un periodo in cui si avvale di alcuni protettori, tra cui gli Sforza e i Colonna, oppure come ad esempio il cardinale Del Monte, che lo alloggia nel suo palazzo e gli commissiona nature morte.

Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923)

Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a Spanish painter, born in Valencia, who excelled in the painting of portraits, landscapes, and monumental works of social and historical themes.

His most typical works are characterized by a dexterous representation of the people and landscape under the sunlight of his native land.

Joaquin Sorolla was the eldest child born to a tradesman, also named Joaquin, and his wife, Concepcion Bastida.

His sister, Concha, was born a year later.
