Vincent van Gogh | The white orchard, 1888

The White Orchard is an oil on canvas (60.0 x 81.0 cm) by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), created in Arles, in April, 1888.

The painting is part of the collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

The perspective chosen by Van Gogh guides your gaze upward into the tangle of branches.

Looking at the painting, you feel as if you are in the middle of the flowering trees.

Soon after Van Gogh arrived in Arles, the spring came.

There were many fruit orchards around the city.

He enthusiastically painted a large series of studies of orchards in blossom.

These plum trees were poorly maintained, as their long branches show.

Van Gogh was especially fond of timeworn trees like these.

Van Gogh was out painting plum trees in bloom, caught between gusts of wind and bursts of sunlight.

He described it to his brother Theo:

"This morning I worked on an orchard of plum trees in blossom - suddenly a tremendous wind began to blow, an effect I’d only ever seen here - and came back again at intervals.

In the intervals, sunshine that made all the little white flowers sparkle.

It was so beautiful!"

La prospettiva scelta da Van Gogh guida lo sguardo verso l'alto, nell'intricato intreccio di rami.

Osservando il dipinto, si ha la sensazione di trovarsi immersi tra gli alberi in fiore.

Poco dopo l'arrivo di Van Gogh ad Arles, giunse la primavera.

Intorno alla città c'erano molti frutteti.

Con entusiasmo, dipinse una vasta serie di studi di frutteti in fiore.

Questi susini, in particolare, apparivano trascurati, come testimoniano i loro lunghi rami.

Van Gogh era particolarmente affezionato ad alberi dall'aspetto vissuto come questi.

Van Gogh stava dipingendo dei susini in fiore, colto tra raffiche di vento e sprazzi di sole.

Lo descrisse al fratello Theo:

«Stamattina ho lavorato in un frutteto di susini in fiore - all'improvviso si è alzato un vento fortissimo, un effetto che avevo visto solo qui - e poi sono tornato a intervalli.

Negli intervalli, il sole faceva brillare tutti i piccoli fiori bianchi.

Era così bello!»
