John Graham-Gilbert (1794-1866) | Portrait painter

John Graham-Gilbert was a Scottish portrait painter and art collector.
Graham-Gilbert was born in Glasgow as John Graham, the son of a West India merchant and was at first trained in his father's counting-house, but preferred art and travelled to London in 1818 where he was admitted into the Royal Academy.

Cecile Walton (1891-1956) Symbolist painter

From an artistic family, Scottish painter Cecile Walton was the daughter of Glasgow Boys artist Edward Arthur Walton.
She studied in London, Edinburgh, Paris and Florence and became a member of the Edinburgh Group, practising in the capital as a painter, sculptor and illustrator.
Influenced by the Symbolist style, her book illustrations for the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen perfectly capture the fanciful characters and stories of the Danish author. | © National Galleries of Scotland

Samuel Peploe (1871-1935) | Colourist painter

Samuel John Peploe, RSA is one of the group of four artists known as the "Scottish Colourists".
The other colourists were John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell🎨 and Leslie Hunter.
Born in Edinburgh, he studied art in Paris and lived there from 1910-1912.
It was through painting holidays in Northern France that he was introduced to the use of bold colour, inspired by the bright sunlight.

Sir Herbert James Gunn, R.A. (1893-1964)

Sir (Herbert) James Gunn RA (30 June 1893 - 30 December 1964) was a Scottish landscape and portrait painter.
Sir Herbert James Gunn (also known as Sir James Gunn) was born in Glasgow on 30 June 1893, the son of Richard Gunn, a draper, and Thomasina Munro.
He studied for several years at the Glasgow School of Art and the Edinburgh College of Art.
In 1911, he went to the Académie Julian in Paris where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens.
After he left Paris, Gunn travelled to Spain and then spent time in London, where he mostly painted landscapes.

Sir William Russell Flint | Raquel And Manuela

Sir William Russell Flint (British, 1880-1969) was surely the greatest watercolour painter of the last century. In a lifetime spanning almost ninety years he fulfilled the role of devoted husband and father, medical illustrator, naval officer, etcher and painter. He enjoyed a dedicated following, was honoured and admired by his peers, and knighted by his monarch.

Alone in London, 1904

Thomas Alexander Ferguson Graham (1840-1906) was born in Kirkwall, Orkney but moved to Edinburgh after the death of his father.
In January 1855 he enrolled as a student at the Trustees' Academy where he was a pupil of Robert Scott Lauder (1803-1869).
Fellow students under Lauder included William McTaggart, William Quiller Orchardson, John Pettie and George Paul Chalmers.
