Pedro Salinas | Lì, oltre il sorriso / There, behind laughter

Lì, oltre il sorriso,
non ti si conosce più.
Vai e vieni, scivoli
per un mondo di valzer...

"Che allegra!" dicono tutti.
Ed è che tu allora
tenti di essere altra,
così somigliante

a te stessa, che ho paura
di perderti, così.

Ti seguo. Attendo. So
che quando non ti osservino
gallerie né astri,
quando il mondo crederà
di sapere ormai chi sei
e dirà: "Sì, ora so",
tu scioglierai,
con le braccia in alto,
dietro i capelli,
il nodo, guardandomi.

Senza rumore di cristallo
cadrà per terra,
maschera senza peso
ormai inutile, il riso.

E quando ti vedrai
nell’amore che io ti tendo sempre
come uno specchio ardente,
tu riconoscerai
un volto serio, grave,
una sconosciuta
alta, pallida e triste,
la mia amata. Che mi ama
al di là delle risa.

Pedro Salinas (1891-1951)

There, behind laughter

There, behind laughter
no one knows you now.

You go and come, slide
through a world of frozen
waltzes, downhill;
and as you wander, whims
and impulses snatch
uninvolved kisses
from you, a momentary
captive of easiness.

"How happy she is!"
they all say.
And now you want
to be another you,
resembling you so much
I am afraid
of losing you. Like that.

I pursue you. I wait, know
when tunnels and planets
don't look at you,
when people think they
know who you are
and say: "Yes, now I know",
and with your arms high
you will undo
the knot back of
your hair, and look at me.

With no noise of breaking glass
your laughter,
now a useless
airy mask,
will topple to the floor.

And when you see yourself in
the love I always give you
like a flaming mirror,
you will recognize
a grave grave face
of a stranger,
tall, pallid and sad,
that is my darling. And she
loves me behind her laughter.
