Archibald Thorburn | Pittore naturalista

Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) è stato un celebre artista Scozzese, considerato uno dei più grandi illustratori di uccelli e fauna selvatica dell'era vittoriana e dell'inizio del XX secolo.
La sua fama deriva dalla straordinaria precisione anatomica unita ad una sensibilità artistica che catturava l'essenza degli animali nel loro habitat naturale, rendendo le sue opere molto ricercate ancora oggi da collezionisti ed appassionati di natura.
Nato a Lasswade, in Scozia, era figlio di Robert Thorburn, un noto miniaturista che lavorò per la Regina Vittoria.

The critic Georges Rivière admired this painting at the 1877 Impressionist exhibition, writing:
"It is strikingly majestic and extraordinarily calm.
It seems that the scene takes place in [Cézanne's] memory while he turns the pages of his life".

John Ruskin | Il legame con l'Italia

John Ruskin (1819-1900) è stato una delle figure intellettuali più influenti della Inghilterra vittoriana, operando come pittore, critico d'arte, scrittore e filosofo sociale.
Sebbene oggi sia ricordato principalmente per i suoi scritti teorici, Ruskin fu un abilissimo acquerellista che utilizzava il disegno come strumento di indagine scientifica e morale della realtà.
La sua opera ha ridefinito il modo di guardare all'arte ed all'architettura, ponendo al centro il legame indissolubile tra l'estetica, la moralità e la società.
Il pensiero di Ruskin si scagliava contro la meccanizzazione ed il degrado portati dalla Rivoluzione Industriale.
