Henri Matisse at the Hermitage Museum

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is exhibited at the The State Hermitage Museum in Hall 440.

The celebrated monumental paintings include the pair of panels known as Dance and Music (both 1910), Family Portrait (1911), Conversation (between 1909-1912).

The first variant of Dance is depicted in another picture entitled Fruits, Flowers, and the Panel “Dance” (1909).

Biografia

Frederick Carl Frieseke nacque in una cittadina del Michigan, figlio del titolare di un'impresa edile. Dopo la morte della madre nel 1881 la famiglia si trasferì in Florida e tornò nel Michigan solo nel 1892. Frederick iniziò allora i suoi studi d'arte presso l'Art Institute of Chicago, dove rimase per quattro anni, per poi recarsi a New York alla Art Student League, dove restò sino al 1897.

Nel 1898 partì per la Francia, e vi rimase tutta la vita, pur continuando a tornare spesso in patria in occasione delle sue mostre o per particolari lavori.

A Parigi si iscrisse all'Académie Julian ed ebbe come maestri Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant e Jean-Paul Laurens.

Jean Geoffroy (1853-1924) | Genre painter

Henri-Jules-Jean Geoffroy, also known by the pseudonym Géo was a French painter🎨 and illustrator, known primarily for his genre scenes🎨 with children. Some sources give his first names in reverse order.

His father, Jean-Baptiste (1822-1895), was a tailor and costume designer.

His mother, Rosalie, was the eldest daughter of an English painter named John Dickinson (1791-1830). They moved to Paris when he was only two.

Diego Rivera (1887-1957)

Diego Rivera, all'anagrafe Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez è stato un pittore e muralista Messicano, famoso per la tematica sociale delle sue opere realizzate in gran parte in edifici pubblici (soprattutto nel centro storico di Città del Messico).

Nacque a Guanajuato l'8 dicembre 1886.

A partire dal 1896 iniziò a prendere lezioni notturne nell'Accademia di San Carlos a Città del Messico, in cui conobbe il noto paesaggista José María Velasco.

Perugino (1445-1523)

Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci -il Perugino, was the greatest painter of the Umbrian school, active mainly in Perugia.

He studied under Fiorenzo di Lorenzo, assisted Piero della Francesca at Arezzo, and in the early 1470s was a fellow pupil of Leonardo da Vinci and Lorenzo di Credi in Verrocchio's studio in Florence.

In 1479 Perugino was summoned to Rome by Pope Sixtus IV to help decorate the Sistine Chapel.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905)

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body.

During his life he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work.

Edgar Degas

Théo van Rysselberghe (Belgian, 1862-1926)

Théophile "Théo" van Rysselberghe was a Belgian neo-impressionist painter, who played a pivotal role in the European art scene at the turn of the twentieth century.

He discovered the pointillist technique when he saw Georges Seurat's La Grande Jatte at the eighth Impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1886.

Camillo Rusconi | Scultore barocco

Camillo Rusconi (Milano, 14 luglio 1658 - Roma, 8 dicembre 1728) è stato uno scultore Italiano.

Figlio di genitori originari del Cantone Ticino, fu allievo a Milano di Giuseppe Rusnati.

Giunse a Roma nel 1684, data in cui è documentato nella bottega del ticinese Ercole Ferrata, un artista formatosi nella scia di Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Lavorò inizialmente ad opere minori, per lo più in stucco, poste a decorazione di architetture (a San Silvestro in Capite, San Salvatore in Lauro, Santa Maria in Vallicella).

Ettore Tito (Italian painter, 1859-1941)

Ettore Tito🎨 was born in Castellammare di Stabia (near Naples) on 17 December 1859 to Ubaldo Tito, a merchant marine captain and Luigia Novello Tito.

His mother was Venetian, and when he was a small boy the family returned to Venice where he was to live for the rest of his life.

He began his art studies at an early age, first with the Dutch artist Cecil Van Haanen, who was to become a lifelong friend, and then at the Accademia di Belle Arti where he had been accepted at the age of 12 before he had even reached the legal age for admission.

Dosso Dossi | Pittore del Rinascimento

Dosso Dossi, pseudonimo di Giovanni Francesco di Niccolò Luteri (San Giovanni del Dosso oppure Tramuschio, 1486 circa – Ferrara, 1542) fu uno dei maggiori pittori del Rinascimento a Ferrara, ed è noto per il suo stile enigmatico ed allegorico.

Il suo nome di battesimo era Giovanni di Niccolò Luteri, e nacque a Tramuschio.

Suo padre lavorava come tesoriere per le terre della famiglia estense, presso la loro corte di Ferrara.

Successivamente, gli Este furono mecenati di Dossi.

Sinisha Kashawelski, 1969 | Surrealist painter

Born in Kumanovo, North Macedonia, Sinisha Kashawelski / Синиша Кашавелски graduated the College of Applied Arts in Skopje, North Macedonia and also the same university's Faculty of Fine Arts.

He is a member of DLUM (National Artists Association of North Macedonia), Société des Artistes Français, Société Du Salon D’automne - Paris, member and Ambassador at Mondial Art Academia and the author of many solo projects and exhibitions.

Caspar David Friedrich (German painter, 1774-1840)

Caspar David Friedrich was one of the greatest exponents in European art of the symbolic🎨 landscape.

He studied at the Academy in Copenhagen (1794-98), and subsequently settled in Dresden, often traveling to other parts of Germany.

Friedrich's landscapes are based entirely on those of northern Germany and are beautiful renderings of trees, hills, harbors, morning mists, and other light effects based on a close observation of nature.

Some of Friedrich's best-known paintings are expressions of a religious mysticism.

Ivan Kramskoj | Pittore Orientalista

Ivan Nikolaevič Kramskoj (Ostrogožsk, 8 giugno 1837 - San Pietroburgo, 6 aprile 1887) è stato un pittore e critico d'arte Russo, inoltre è stato il leader intellettuale dei Peredvižniki tra il 1860-1880.

Originario da una povera famiglia piccolo borghese, dal 1857-1863 studiò all'Accademia Imperiale d'Arte, in seguito si oppose all'arte accademica e fu uno degli iniziatori della rivolta dei quattordici che finì con l'espulsione dall'accademia, a causa di ciò crearono il gruppo dell'Artel dei pittori ("Артель художников").

Yarek Godfrey (Polish, 1957-2014)

Born in Olsztyn, Poland, Yarek Godfrey (real name Jaroslaw Pawel Nowicki) was a Polish artist of French, British and Austrian origins.

In 1982 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and the Studies for Stage Costume design for theater in Cracow.

In 1983 he moved to Paris, where he lived until his death in 2014.

Godfrey received numerous awards for his work (among others, the Gold Medal of the XXXVIII Salon of Young Artists, Grand Palais, Paris, 1987; Grand Prix of the XXVI International Art Salon Côte d’Azur, Cannes, 1990).

He presented his work at numerous group and individual exhibitions, primarily in the United States and France, but also in Belgium, Monaco or Italy. He died tragically on March 28th, 2014.

Elie Anatole Pavil | The quay of tournelle at sunset in winter

Born in Odessa, Elie Anatole Pavil (1873-1948) came to Paris in 1892 and dedicated himself to capturing its atmosphere on canvas. For most of the next fifty years he painted the cafes, the beautiful women, the jazz bands and artist ateliers of Paris.

His paintings show an intimate knowledge of the inhabitants of the streets and alley’s of Montmartre. Elegant couples dancing, beautiful models posing, working men finishing their day with a drink at the bar, all were captured in Pavil’s carefully balanced compositions, many of which show the distinct the influence of Degas🎨 and Renoir🎨.

Elie Anatole Pavil | Evening in a Parisian Cafe

Elie Anatole Pavil (1873-1948) was an Ukrainian-born French painter.

Pavil was born in Odessa, Russia in 1873. He came to Paris in 1892.

Pavil exhibited at the Salon des Artists Français, Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. He exhibited at Galerie Charpentier, Galerie Georges Petit, and Galerie Bernheim Jeune. Claude Monet described Pavil’s paintings as “little marvels”.

He was awarded Chevailier de la l’Légion d’Honneur. Pavil also counted Pissaro among his friends. Pavil continued painting with the same passion until the end of his days.

August von Siegen (German painter, 1850-1910)

August von Siegen was a German painter🎨 who specialized in cityscapes of in the style of European and "Oriental" -Eastern Mediterranean cities.

He lived in Munich but also lived and worked in Vienna. He travelled across Europe to Holland, Venice and Rome painting the architectural landscapes of cities and towns.

He also travelled to Izmir in Turkey and produced a number of Orientalist paintings. His works are highly popular with crisp, architectural details as in this fine example.

Colors | Yellow

Claude Monet | Yellow Irises, 1917

Yellow is the color between orange and green on the spectrum of visible light.

It is evoked by light with a dominant wavelength of roughly 570-590 nm.

It is a primary color in subtractive color systems, used in painting or color printing.

In the RGB color model, used to create colors on television and computer screens, yellow is a secondary color made by combining red and green at equal intensity.

Carotenoids give the characteristic yellow color to autumn leaves, corn, canaries, daffodils, and lemons, as well as egg yolks, buttercups, and bananas.

They absorb light energy and protect plants from photodamage.

Sunlight has a slight yellowish hue when sun is near a horizon, due to atmosphere scattering shorter wavelengths (green, blue, and violet).
