Ugo Flumiani (1876-1938)

Ugo Flumiani viene considerato il principale pittore di marine a Trieste tra la fine dell‘800 e l’inizio del ‘900.

Iniziò il suo percorso artistico all’Accademia di Venezia seguendo i corsi di paesaggio di Guglielmo Ciardi. Si spostò poi all’Accademia di Bologna per studiare architettura e decorazione.

Completò quindi la sua formazione con un soggiorno a Monaco di Baviera dove apprese la lezione impressionista diffusa a Trieste dall’amico Umberto Veruda.

Iniziò l’attività espositiva a Trieste nel 1895, partecipando assiduamente alle manifestazioni del Circolo Artistico dal 1906-1925.

Tra il 1927-1937 fu presente alle mostre del Sindacato Fascista di Belle Arti.

Johann Jakob Frey (1813-1865)

Johann Jakob Frey (27 January 1813 - 30 September 1865), a Swiss⏩ landscape painter, a native of Basle, studied principally in Italy, and his views of that country are much valued.

From Egypt, whither he accompanied Professor Lepsius, he brought many excellent sketches of the Pyramids, Labyrinths, ecc.

George Sheridan Knowles (1863-1931)

Il pittore Britanico⏩ George Sheridan Knowles ha prodotto tele dai temi nostalgici, spesso in costume, con l'intento di evocare tempi e sentimenti trascorsi, tra cui i primissimi, timidi approcci dettati dalla passione, ma soprattutto l'ingenuità legata all'infanzia, e proprio per questo sua ricorrente romantica nostalgia fu molto apprezzato già in epoca vittoriana.

Egli studiò arte presso la Manchester School of Art ed alla Royal Academy Schools, per giungere a dipingere sia tele accademiche che nostalgiche, ravvivate da colori luminosi e da un leggero tocco di pennello che proprio in quegli anni stava sperimentando l'impressionismo che, sfumando la scena, giunge ad acuirne il carattere evocativo.

Carl Vilhelm Holsøe (Aarhus, 12 March 1863 - Asserbo, 7 November 1935)⏯ was a Danish artist who primarily painted interiors.

olsøe's paintings include landscapes, still lifes and flowers, but like Hammershøi he primarily painted domestic interior scenes; they undoubtedly influenced each other, but it is impossible to know who first gravitated towards this subject. It was in general increasingly popular among Danish painters as the country became more industrial, with implications of refuge and restoration from professional life and the city.

John Singer Sargent | American Impressionism

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian Era luxury.

The Edwardian Period corresponds to the French Belle Époque period. Despite its brief pre-eminence, the period is characterized by its own unique architectural style, fashion, and lifestyle.

Art Nouveau had a particularly strong influence.

Artists were influenced by the development of the automobile and electricity, and a greater awareness of human rights.

Thomas Waterman Wood | Threading a Needle, 1870

Thomas Waterman Wood (1823-1903) was an American painter born in Montpelier, Vermont.

In Threading a Needle, an elderly lady sits with a pair of socks on her lap; large holes and frayed ends indicate that they badly need mending.

Probably compensating for an unsteady hand, she furrows her brow and bites her lip in concentration as she peers through her eyeglasses to thread a needle.

Renoir | La Grenouillère, 1869

La Grenouillère, the frog pond was a popular venue for outings from Paris and for bathing in the summer, situated outside Bougival to the west of the capital. The sun is filtered through the green leaves and it sparkles on the surface of the river Seine.

People are bathing. Some are in boats, rowing or sailing on the river. A group of men in suits and women wearing crinolines have sought shade beneath a tree on the little artificial island known as Camembert or the flowerpot.

Daniel Sprick, 1953 | Figurative painter

Daniel Sprick is an Colorado-based artist, known for his contemporary realism in figurative, still-life and landscape paintings.

For Sprick, Northern and Italian Renaissance are the periods some of his favorite artworks were done. Starting with the 1400s, and going forward to the work of Hans Holbein and Vermeer.

When talking about the depth and sincerity, both Baroque and Renaissance painting have become a standard for the artist. The idea of working with no limit on the labor required to finish the piece is appealing to him.

János Vaszary | The Golden Age, 1898

János Miklós Vaszary (30 November 1867, Kaposvár - 19 April 1939, Budapest) was a Hungarian painter⏭ and graphic artist.

He was born into a prominent Catholic family and his uncle was Kolos Ferenc Vaszary, the Archbishop of Esztergom. His art studies began at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts under János Greguss (hu). In 1887, he went to Munich, where he studied with Gabriel von Hackl and Ludwig von Löfftz. After seeing an exhibition of paintings by Jules Bastien-Lepage, he moved to Paris in 1899 and enrolled at the Académie Julian.

Alicia Brizzio, Argentina

La pittrice Alicia Brizzio è nata a Mar del Plata, in Argentina.

Vive nella città di Buenos Aires dal 1992. Ha frequentato numerosi corsi e workshop su diverse tecniche ad olio, acrilico e pastello.

Ha ricevuto il suo CPA e parallelamente ha iniziato a dipingere da sola.

Ha frequentato seminari intensivi per pittori sia nazionali che internazionali, e poi ulteriormente perfezionati, con insegnanti eccezionali come Axel Amuchastegui, Marcos Borio, Adelia Dalessandro e Ricardo Celma.

Dal 2005 insegna disegno e pittura continuando a dedicarsi alla creazione delle proprie opere.

I suoi dipinti fanno parte di collezioni private in Argentina, USA, Porto Rico, Cile, Ecuador, Spagna, Italia ed Emirati Arabi Uniti.

Sherree Valentine-Daines (British, 1956)

Sherree Valentine-Daines was born in Effingham, Surrey. She was not always an artist, at 18 she began work as a legal secretary in London.

Realising the quality of the idle sketches she drew on her legal pads, it became clear that she had a talent for drawing. Valentine-Daines studied fine art at Epsom School of Art for 4 years, leaving in 1980.

It was during her time at art school that she developed an interest in painting figures. After graduating, she spent the first summer in Cornwall, painting villages, harbours and beaches and most of all the people. She has also been known to paint the busy streets of London, especially showing passers by hailing cabs, looking around markets or leaving the theatre.

Carl Vilhelm Holsøe | Pittore di interni

Il pittore Carl Vilhelm Holsoe (1863-1935), membro di spicco della scuola di pittura Danese nella seconda metà del XIX e all'inizio del XX secolo, era molto apprezzato da colleghi e collezionisti.

Carl Vilhelm Holsøe è nato nella Danimarca occidentale e si è trasferito a Copenaghen nel 1882 per studiare alla Kongelige Danke Kunstakademi.

Nel 1884 frequentò le lezioni alla Kunstnernes Studieskole sotto la guida di Peder Severin Kroyer.

Lì avrebbe stretto amicizia per tutta la vita con due personalità, Peter Ilsted ed Wilhelm Hammershoi, che avrebbero influenzato la direzione della sua intera carriera.

Ognuno ha preso come soggetto principale scene di interni basate sulle proprie famiglie, creando un genere dedicato alla "tranquillità domestica".

Wendy Ng (Chinese painter)

Deidre But-Husaim (Australian painter, 1959)

Deidre But-Husaim based in Adelaide, South Australia, undertook her formative art study at the Adelaide Central School of Art, where she has since taught painting.

After some years’ travel, exhibiting and working independently, she completed her degree through Adelaide Centre for the Arts in 2006.

Since then, in a number of portraits of both notable Australian public figures and ‘unknown’ subjects, she has sought to explore the dichotomy of the public and private self.

Her work has featured in solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, and has been selected for exhibition in the Doug Moran Portrait Prize, the Portia Geach Memorial Award, the Sulman Prize, the Waterhouse National Science Art Prize, the Archibald Prize, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize, the Albany Art Prize, the Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize and the Geelong Contemporary Art Prize.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec | Il ritrattista del "popolo della notte"

Agli effetti della produzione artistica lautreciana questa diversificazione sociale così massiccia risultò determinante. Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) infatti, concepì i suoi dipinti come fedele specchio della quotidianità urbana di Montmartre, nel segno di una ripresa (e, anche, di un aggiornamento) del programma espresso da Charles Baudelaire nel 1846:

«La nostra epoca non è meno ricca di temi sublimi di quella precedente [...] Ho osservato che la maggioranza degli artisti che hanno condannato i soggetti moderni si sono accontentati di soggetti pubblici e ufficiali [...]

Cath Riley, 1952

L'artista Cath (Catherine) Riley è nata a Keighley. Ha conseguito una laurea con lode in ricamo ed un master in belle arti presso il Politecnico di Manchester e ha rapidamente guadagnato l'attenzione per la sua opera d'arte tridimensionale.

Nel 1979, ad esempio, George Melly ha acquistato il suo collage di tecnica mista, "La signora con il cappello", per l'Arts Council Collection, e altri pezzi sono stati acquisiti da Granada Television, North West Arts e Calderdale Museums and Galleries.

Gerard Di-Maccio, 1938

Leader del movimento artistico visionario Francese, Gérard Di-Maccio è un pittore nato in Algeria quando era ancora una colonia francese, nel lontano 1938.

Ha studiato arte fin dalla tenera età di 14 anni.

Suo nonno è stato il suo primo ammiratore che ha motivato il ragazzo appendendo il suo primo quadro nel vetrina.

I genitori di Di-Maccio, consapevoli della passione e del talento del figlio maggiore, decisero di lasciare la loro casa per trasferirsi a Parigi.

Fractal Art

Fractal art is a form of algorithmic art created by calculating fractal objects and representing the calculation results as still images, animations, and media.

It is a genre of computer art and digital art which are part of new media art. The mathematical beauty of fractals lies at the intersection of generative art and computer art. They combine to produce a type of abstract art.

Noè Bordignon | Autunno

Noè Raimondo Bordignon (1841-1922) nasce a Salvarosa di Castelfranco Veneto dal sarto Domenico Lazzaro ed Angela Dorella; è il quinto di nove figli.

Nel 1853 la famiglia Bordignon da Salvarosa si trasferisce a Castelfranco in una casa di Borgo Treviso.

Il 16 novembre 1858 si iscrive all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia grazie al sostegno economico del conte Francesco Revedin, del farmacista Giovanni Ruzza e del ricevitore delle imposte Giambattista Finazzi.

1866/1867 - Conclude gli studi presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. Si è distinto vincendo numerosi premi seguendo in particolare i corsi di disegno di Michelangelo Grigoletti e di pittura di Carl Blaas.

Claude Theberge (1934-2008)

Canadian painter Claude Théberge was known primarily for his paintings, but also produced murals, stained glass and sculptures.

Over many years he divided is time between Paris and Montreal, all the while exploring the full range between pure Abstraction and Hyper-realism.

Édouard Manet (1832-1883)

Édouard Manet nato in una famiglia borghese, dopo gli studi classici si arruolò in Marina. Respinto agli esami, decise di iniziare la carriera artistica. Dal 1850-1856 studiò presso il pittore accademico Couture, pur non condividendone gli insegnamenti.

Viaggiò molto in Italia, Olanda, Germania, Austria, studiando soprattutto i pittori che avevano scelto il linguaggio tonale quali Giorgione, Tiziano, gli olandesi del Seicento, Goya e Velazquez.

Notevole influenza ebbe sulla definizione del suo stile anche la conoscenza delle stampe giapponesi. Nell’arte giapponese, infatti, il problema della simulazione tridimensionale viene quasi sempre ignorato, risolvendo la figurazione solo con la linea di contorno sul piano bidimensionale.

Michelangelo Buonarroti | Risen Christ, 1521

"The Risen Christ" - "Cristo della Minerva", also known as Christ the Redeemer or Christ Carrying the Cross, is a marble sculpture by the Italy High Renaissance master Michelangelo, finished in 1521.

It is in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, to the left of the main altar.

The work was commissioned in June 1514, by the Roman patrician Metello Vari, who stipulated only that the nude standing figure would have the Cross in his arms, but left the composition entirely to Michelangelo.

Andrea del Sarto | The Virgin and child, 1528

This intimate devotional image shows the Virgin looking for signs of the Christ Child’s first teeth.

The painting is unfinished, but provided the starting point for at least three other versions of similar size, all apparently painted at the same time by Sarto and his workshop.

The painting must have been a devotional image intended for a domestic setting.

It has a natural directness as the Virgin seems to be firmly but gently holding down the Christ Child’s lower lip and searching for signs of teeth.

Thomas Kennington | Homeless, 1890

Many orphaned or abandoned children were living on the streets during this time.

Some survived by selling matches, working as chimney sweeps or by scrounging in the River Thames for objects of value to sell.

Often exhausted and starved, these homeless children were exposed to many diseases, such as whooping cough, influenza and measles, life threatening diseases in those days.

William Bouguereau | Le citron, 1899

In late February, 1899, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) traveled to the south of France with his wife, Elizabeth, and son, Paul.

Doctors had recommended the warm and sunny climate to help Paul, as he had been diagnosed with tuberculosis the year before.

They went to the picturesque seaside town of Menton and took up residence in the Hôtel des Îles Britanniques, where they would stay until late May.

While Bouguereau was committed to supporting his son's health, he was not content to leave his studio, commissions and pupils.

Johannes Vermeer | Dalla ricchezza alla povertà

Johannes Vermeer è stato un artista rispettato a Delft, ma era quasi sconosciuto al di fuori della sua città natale.

Un mecenate locale di nome Pieter van Ruijven aveva acquistato gran parte della sua produzione, il che mantenne Vermeer a galla finanziariamente ma ridusse la possibilità che la sua fama si diffondesse.

Diversi fattori contribuirono alla sua limitata produzione.

Si ritiene che Vermeer abbia prodotto un totale di meno di 50 dipinti, di cui 34 sono sopravvissuti.

Vermeer non ebbe mai allievi, anche se uno studioso ha suggerito che Vermeer insegnò a dipingere alla figlia maggiore Maria.

Luis Cohen Fusé (Argentine painter, 1944-2019)

Artista poliedrico e versatile, Fusé ha lavorato su tutti i tipi di media come design di gioielli, affreschi e piastrelle, scultura, design di costumi per la danza ed il teatro, pittura da cavalletto ecc.

Luis Cohen Fusé è nato a Buenos Aires, in Argentina in una famiglia di radici europee. Fin da piccolo prova un grande interesse per il disegno ed un grande fascino per l'Oriente, che lo portano a studiare ceramica ed arti plastiche presso la Scuola di Belle Arti di Mar del Plata, una località balneare a 400 km di distanza della capitale argentina dove si svolgono la sua infanzia e giovinezza.

Nel 1973 si laurea in architettura presso l'Università Nazionale di Buenos Aires ed alterna gli studi al lavoro di artista e disegnatore di figure e scenografie per varie compagnie di danza e teatro.

Marion Lucka, 1963 | Pittrice surrealista

Marion Lucka è nata a Kaiserhammer vicino a Selb ed ora lavora come pittrice freelance a Thierstein.

Fin dall'infanzia voleva esprimersi attraverso la sua pittura.

Terminata la scuola secondaria a Bayreuth, ha iniziato una formazione professionale per diventare una litografa nell'industria della porcellana residente.

Da autodidatta, l'artista Marion Lucka ha mostre regolari dal 1986, mostrandola disegni, dipinti, acquarelli e sculture.

Leonid Pasternak (1862-1945)

Leonid Osipovich Pasternak / Леони́д О́сипович Пастерна́к was a Russian post-impressionist painter.

He was the father of the poet and novelist Boris Pasternak.

Pasternak was awarded a medal at the World Fair in Paris (1900) for his illustrations of Tolstoy's novels.

Pasternak was elected a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1905), and also taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

Nikolaos Gyzis / Νικόλαος Γύζης | Mother and Child, 1896

Gauguin and Van Gogh

When Gauguin agreed to visit Arles in 1888, Van Gogh hoped for friendship and to realise his idea of an artists' collective.

Van Gogh prepared for Gauguin's arrival by painting four versions of Sunflowers in one week.

"In the hope of living in a studio of our own with Gauguin", he wrote in a letter to Theo, "I'd like to do a decoration for the studio.

Nothing but large Sunflowers".

El Greco e l'Arte Bizantina

A partire dagli inizi del XX secolo, gli studiosi hanno iniziato a chiedersi se lo stile di El Greco (1541-1614) potesse avere le sue origini nell'arte bizantina.

Alcuni storici dell'arte hanno sostenuto che le radici artistiche di El Greco affondavano profondamente nella tradizione bizantina, e che le sue caratteristiche più peculiari discendono in maniera diretta dall'arte dei suoi antenati, altri al contrario hanno affermato che l'arte bizantina non può essere messa in relazione con le opere di El Greco della fine della sua carriera.

La scoperta della "Dormizione della Vergine" sull'isola di Siro, opera autentica e firmata dall'artista del suo periodo cretese, e le approfondite ricerche d'archivio dei primi anni sessanta, hanno contribuito a riaccendere il dibattito e a rivalutare queste teorie.

Delphin Enjolras (1857-1945)

Delphin Enjolras (1857 Coucouron - 1945 Toulouse) was a French academic painter. Enjolras painted portraits, figures, interiors, and used mostly watercolours, oil and pastels.

He is best known for his intimate portraits of young women performing mundane activities such as reading or sewing, often illuminated by lamplight.

Perhaps his most famous work is the "Young Woman Reading by a Window".

Lorenzo Quinn, 1966 | Scultore figurativo

Nato a Roma, Lorenzo Quinn, figlio dell’attore americano Anthony Quinn é cresciuto tra gli Stati Uniti e l'Italia, ma vive a Barcellona.

Ha incominciato a manifestare la sua attitudine artistica proprio a Roma, nei primi anni ottanta, al punto da intraprendere gli studi all'American Academy of Fine Arts di New York.

Attratto anche dalla passione per la recitazione, incomincia a farsi conoscere come attore sul grande schermo, interpretando la parte del pittore surrealista Salvador Dalì (1904-1989) accanto a Sarah Douglas, nel 1991.

Dopo essersi personificato nei panni del pittore catalano e aver ricevuto il premio come miglior attore al Film Festival di Biarritz, Quinn decide di allontanarsi gradualmente dal cinema per dedicarsi al mondo dell’arte e, in particolar modo, alla scultura.

Guido Reni (1575-1642)

Guido Reni (4 November 1575 - 18 August 1642) was an Italian painter of high-Baroque style.

He painted primarily religious works, as well as mythological and allegorical subjects.

Active in Rome, Naples, and his native Bologna, he became the dominant figure in the Bolognese School, and his eclectic classicism was widely influential.

La Galleria degli Uffizi | Architettura

La costruzione fu iniziata nel 1560 e realizzata adottando l'ordine dorico, secondo il Vasari, "più sicuro e più fermo degl'altri, [...] sempre piaciuto molto al signor duca Cosimo".

Nel 1565 presentava già completati i cosiddetti Uffizi Lunghi ed il tratto che si affacciava sull'Arno.

Il palazzo degli Uffizi è composto da due corpi di fabbrica longitudinali principali, collegati verso sud da un lato più breve del tutto analogo, dando origine così ad un complesso a "U", che abbraccia un piazzale e sfonda prospettivamente verso piazza della Signoria, con una perfetta inquadratura di Palazzo Vecchio e della sua torre.

El Greco (1541-1614)

El Greco's dramatic and expressionistic style was met with puzzlement by his contemporaries but found appreciation in the 20th century.

El Greco is regarded as a precursor of both Expressionism and Cubism, while his personality and works were a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Nikos Kazantzakis.

El Greco has been characterized by modern scholars as an artist so individual that he belongs to no conventional school.

He is best known for tortuously elongated figures and often fantastic or phantasmagorical pigmentation, marrying Byzantine traditions with those of Western painting.

Ken Hamilton

Nato da genitori irlandesi missionari in Nigeria, si trasferisce da piccolo a Belfast nell'Irlanda del Nord e li si formerà artisticamente per poi studiare i grandi artisti nei musei più importanti d'Europa.

Ken Hamilton ha studiato all'Università dell'Ulster presso il Belfast College of Art.

Cercando di conoscere la scienza dell'arte, Hamilton ha trascorso molto tempo a ricercare e sperimentare per imparare come nessun altro aveva fatto prima.

Al contrario di altri pittori, le opere di Hamilton non ritraggono tanto le sue stesse emozioni; invece hanno rivelato il mondo in cui viviamo oggi e ciò che sappiamo del nostro mondo oggi.

Jules-Joseph Lefebvre | Graziella, 1878

Winner of the coveted Prix de Rome in 1861, Jules-Joseph Lefebvre fulfilled his early promise both as a painter of meticulously executed portraits and figures and as a teacher: during his long career, he earned three Salon medals, was appointed to the French Academy of Fine Arts, and attained the rank of Commander in the Legion of Honor.

Catharine Lorillard Wolfe commissioned Graziella in 1878.

It depicts the heroine of Alphonse de Lamartine’s popular tale of the same name, which was first published in 1849.

Gustav Klimt | Vienna Secession years

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) became one of the founding members and president of the Wiener Sezession (Vienna Secession) in 1897 and of the group's periodical, Ver Sacrum ("Sacred Spring").

He remained with the Secession until 1908.

The goals of the group were to provide exhibitions for unconventional young artists, to bring the works of the best foreign artists to Vienna, and to publish its own magazine to showcase the work of members.

The group declared no manifesto and did not set out to encourage any particular style - Naturalists, Realists, and Symbolists all coexisted. The government supported their efforts and gave them a lease on public land to erect an exhibition hall.

Gustav Klimt nacque il 14 luglio 1862 a Baumgarten, allora sobborgo di Vienna, secondo di sette fratelli (quattro femmine e tre maschi): il padre Ernst Klimt (1834-1892), nativo della Boemia, era un orafo, mentre la madre, Anna Finster (1836-1915), era una donna colta e versata nella musica lirica.

Tutti i figli maschi della famiglia Klimt riveleranno in futuro una forte inclinazione per l'arte: i fratelli minori di Gustav, Ernst e Georg, diverranno anch'essi pittori.
