Fritz von Uhde | Genre painter

Fritz von Uhde (born Friedrich Hermann Carl Uhde; 1848-1911) was a German painter of genre and religious subjects.

His style lay in-between Realism and Impressionism, he was once known as "Germany's outstanding impressionist" and he became one of the first painters to introduce plein-air painting in his country.

Biography

Uhde was born in Wolkenburg, Saxony.

His family, moderately wealthy civil servants, had artistic interests.

Joseph Oppenheimer | Impressionist painter

Joseph Oppenheimer (1876-1967) was born in Würzburg, Germany. From an early age his whole life was art.

At 15, before being old enough to enroll in the Munich Academy of Art, he left school and began studying art with some of the foremost German painters such as Fehr.

Perhaps the impetus for this was his chance meeting with The Iron Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, at the age on 14 when they both stayed at the same spa hotel in Bad Kissingen.

Joseph made a pencil sketch of Bismarck and presented it to him.

Vincent Magni, 1963 | Abstract artist

Artist since always, Vincent Magni was born in St Etienne. He currently lives and works in France, in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, in the Yonne.

It is the place where he created in 2006, in an old industrial wasteland of 10 000 square meters, a village of artists called "The Poetry", where he invites other creators to come to settle there.

An innovative and inspired sculptor, the characters he creates are tribute to life and movement, while respecting the materials used.

Playing with the idea of an intrinsic dynamics, its metal mobiles are animated with a life of their own and interact directly with the spectator.

Their brilliant colors, like a hymn to joy, give them the appearance of human-sized toys.

Il desiderio di conoscere il Mezzogiorno francese, con la sua luce e le sue tinte mediterranee così lontane dal cromatismo nordico, fu una buona occasione per assimilare gli stimoli artistici raccolti a Parigi e per porre fine alla convivenza con Théo, resa più difficile dal carattere irritabile di entrambi.

«Ho intenzione una volta o l'altra, appena posso, di andarmene nel Sud, dove c'è ancora più colore e ancora più sole [...] Quest'estate, quando dipingevo il paesaggio ad Asnières, vi ho visto più colore che in passato».

Il Meridione francese, luogo elettivo di Zola, Cézanne (che vi avevano trascorso l'infanzia) e di Monticelli (che vi era morto), rispose splendidamente alle esigenze di van Gogh, che vi si stabilì nel febbraio del 1888.

Periodicamente era molto produttiva e ha partecipato a 106 mostre.

Sigrid Hjertén nacque a Sundsvall il 27 ottobre 1885.

Dopo i primi studi d'arte a Stoccolma, nel 1909 conobbe il suo futuro marito, il pittore Isaac Hirsche Grünewald, che sposò nel 1911.

Andrea del Sarto | I disegni

Andrea del Sarto - Pittore, nato a Firenze il 6 luglio 1486 da Angiolo di Francesco sarto, donde il cognome assunto insieme con uno stemma di due seste incrociate.

Da Andrea d'Angiolo od Angeli alla latina deriva anche la sigla di due A incrociate, che si trova su varî dipinti di del Sarto, la quale, supposta da G. Cinelli (Bellezze di Firenze, Firenze 1677) composta di A e V, ne avvalorò lungamente la credenza in un casato Vannucchi.

Egli fu posto a sette anni presso un orefice, indi presso un pittore dozzinale, Giovanni o meglio Andrea Barile, che avvedutosi della meravigliosa attitudine di del Sarto per il disegno lo acconciò con Piero di Cosimo, presso il quale rimase varî anni, recandosi le feste alla sala del papa per studiare i celebri cartoni di Leonardo da Vinci e di Michelangelo.

Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908)

Giovanni Fattori viene considerato, insieme a Silvestro Lega ed a Telemaco Signorini, tra i maggiori esponenti del Movimento dei Macchiaioli.

Caso unico fra gli artisti più conosciuti, tutta la sua produzione pittorica nota è posteriore ai suoi quaranta anni.

Fattori prese parte alle battaglie per l'Unità d'Italia, collaborando con il Partito d'Azione come 'fattorino di corrispondenza'.

Il primo lavoro di soggetto risorgimentale, Il campo italiano alla battaglia di Magenta, risale a questo periodo.

Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina | Saint Catherine, 1510

This is one of the Spanish Renaissance's most emblematic depictions of a female figure and the best known of Yáñez de la Almedina’s works.

Following the Cardinal’s statement, the portrait was for long assumed to depict Beatrice d’Este, the wife of Ludovico il Moro.

Aeneas Fleeing from Troy is a painting by Federico Barocci (Federico Fiori), located in the Borghese Collection in Rome.

History

Considering Barocci’s only attempt at a historical narration, this scene was twice ordered by the Della Rovere family as a gift for their further social connection.

The first, now lost, the artwork was intended for the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Rudolph II.

The second was given to Cardinal Scipione Borghese, adapting the imperial allegory as a scene of the spiritual purity of the Roman Cardinal.

She was born in Florence and studied under Hyacinthe Rigaud and François Boucher in Paris from 1726.

Returning later to Florence she married Giuseppe Cerroti and continued her artistic studies under Conti.

Anna Hills | Impressionist painter

Anna Althea Hills (1882-1930) was an American plein air painter who specialized in impressionist landscapes of the Southern California coast.

Hills was born in Ravenna, Ohio. Her father was the Reverend Aaron Merritt Hills and her mother was Althea Alamanda Ford. Anna was the second of five children.

In 1886, her mother died and her father remarried. Because of her father’s occupation, Anna’s family moved often, living in several places throughout the Midwest.

In 1898, Hills enrolled for art classes at Olivet College in Michigan.

Antonio Bueno | Modern painter of Reality

Antonio Bueno (21 July 1918 - 26 September 1984) was an Italian painter of Spanish origin, who acquired Italian citizenship in 1970.

He was born in Berlin while his journalist father was posted there by the newspaper ABC of Madrid.

Bueno undertook art studies in Spain and Switzerland. In 1937, he was in Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon des Jeunes; then in 1940 with his brother Xavier, he moved to Italy.

After a post-impressionist experience, immediately after World War II he joined the school of Armenian artist Gregorio Sciltian, painting trompe-l'œil work.

De Pury was born on 6 March 1845 in Neuchâtel.

He was a member of a Prussian noble family and was a nephew of James-Ferdinand de Pury.

He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying painting and engraving.

Lytras Nikephoros | The Kiss (1878) at the Louvre

In "The Kiss", the scene is set in a courtyard, in which a slender girl is rising on the tips of her tows in order to kiss her beloved, whose head can be seen through the window high up.

The lily in the pot symbolises purity, while its slender stem echoes the slender girl’s motion. Ochre and white prevail, along with some red on the girl's fez.

The latter colour was a favourite of Nikephoros Lytras'.

Paolo Caliari (o Cagliari) (1528-1588) prese il cognome Veronese dalla sua città natale, Verona.

Fu un famoso pittore del Rinascimento, il cui lavoro a Venezia fu magistrale.

Insieme ad altri artisti veneziani, come Tiziano (1485-1576) e Tintoretto (1518-1594), Veronese fu uno degli artisti di spicco in città.

Rappresentativo della scuola veneziana, Veronese fu un colorista eccezionale, che dipinse elaborati cicli narrativi in un drammatico stile manierista.

Insignita anche di altri premi, è stata la prima donna ad essere ammessa alla Pontificia accademia delle scienze.

Il 1º agosto 2001 è stata nominata senatrice a vita "per aver illustrato la Patria con altissimi meriti nel campo scientifico e sociale".

James Sant | Courage, Anxiety and Despair: Watching the Battle, 1850-60

At his death in 1916, at the age of ninety-six, James Sant, R.A., C.V.0. (British painter, 1820-1916) was the longest living member of the Royal Academy since the institution's foundation in 1768, having exhibited well over two hundred pictures during a period of seventy-six years.

Sant was a prolific artist who worked his way through a range of influences, including symbolism (as in this effort) and impressionism.

Domenico Fetti (1589-1623) was probably born in Rome, where he trained with the Florentine Ludovico Cigoli in the early years of the 17th century and studied the dramatic chiaroscuro of Caravaggio and his followers.

Through Cigoli, Fetti was introduced to Cardinal Ferdinando Gonzaga, who returned to Mantua in 1613 to become Duke Ferdinando II, inviting Fetti to come with him and serve as Court Painter.

In Mantua, Fetti saw the works of Peter Paul Rubens, whose transparent red and blue fleshtones he adopted, as well as the art of Giulio Romano and that of the great Venetian painters of the 16th century, Titian and Tintoretto, whose rich colors and rapid, painterly brushtrokes greatly informed his mature style.

Princess Louise Hollandine of the Palatinate (18 April 1622 - 11 February 1709) was a painter and abbess.

She was a daughter of Frederick V of the Palatinate, the "Winter King" of Bohemia, and Scottish princess Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of King James VI and I.

She is also known for her romantic involvement with the Marquess of Montrose.

Early life

Born in April 1622, Louise Hollandine was born at the Hague Palace in Holland, as her father was living in exile at the court of his uncle, Maurice, Prince of Orange.

It is Ginevra Cantofoli the painter of the "Portrait of Beatrice Cenci"!

A long historical tradition has identified Beatrice Cenci in this portrait.

Formerly attributed to Guido Reni, it is now attributed to Italian Baroque painter Ginevra Cantofoli (Bologna 1618-1672).

The girl turns to us with an appealing and innocent gaze that reminds us of her tragic fate.

After years of oppression and abduction in a castle, Beatrice supported by her brothers and stepmother planned the murder of her father, Francesco Cenci, who was a dissolute and deprived man.
